Pre-construction Activity Notice

GLX Constructors, the design-build entity for the MBTA Green Line Extension Project, is planning to begin pre-construction activities in advance of excavation work that is scheduled for Spring of 2018. These preconstruction activities are needed to collect data for the completion design work. The activities include land survey, soil drilling/boring, tree & vegetation removal, and pre-construction property surveys for abutting homes and businesses along the existing commuter rail lines. Home owners and businesses will be notified when pre-construction survey work is scheduled for their property.

The following is a tentative overview schedule of activities beginning next week. All work is weather permitting.

  • Week of January 29th - Survey control project-wide
  • Week of February 5th - Geotechnical investigation for the viaduct, Red Bridge area, & Lechmere area. Survey control project-wide continues.
  • Week of February 12th - Geotechnical investigation for viaduct, Union Square, & Red Bridge Area. Utility test pitting for Lechmere area. Survey control corridor wide continues

The following are activities that are being formulated in the next 6 weeks:

  • Mid-Late End of February 2018 - Preconstruction property surveys, survey control, and geotechnical boring work continues from East Somerville to Magoun Sq. and Lechmere to Union Square. Utility test pitting at roadways in Somerville and Medford. Fencing off of parking and interior building modifications at the Community Alternatives Building (35 Charlestown Street, Somerville).
  • March 2018 - Mobilization and access, temporary fencing, and layout in advance of excavation work Spring of 2018, right of way clearing, geotechnical borings, and utility test pitting.

Nighttime Construction Advisory - Medford

Beginning the evening of Monday, December 18th, and continuing through Thursday, December 21st, nighttime construction work is anticipated between the hours of 11:30 PM (after the last train passes) and 6:00 AM the following morning. The approximate location of this activity will run from the College Avenue Bridge to the Harvard Street Bridge along the Lowell Commuter Rail right of way in Medford.

The purpose of this work is to allow for the leveling of newly installed track. The primary machinery involved in this process is a leveling device which rides slowly along the rails while making fine-tuned adjustments to the track grade and alignment. Occasionally, trucks supporting the leveling process may trigger audible back-up alarms.

The GLX Team apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause, and has instructed work crews to minimize impacts to the community.

This work remains critical to support the next phases of work in preparation for major GLX construction commencing in 2018. Thank you for your continued interest in this signature project.

Update to November 3rd Nighttime Construction Advisory

Nighttime Construction Advisory

This advisory is an update to our November 3rd notice which announced nighttime work scheduled to take place over the weekends beginning November 10th and 17th. This work has been expanded to include weeknight work starting Monday night, November 13th, through Friday morning, November 17th.

Location:

Colby St and Burget Avenue neighborhoods in Medford:

  • Friday, November 10 through Monday morning, November 20, 2017: Work crews will complete the cut-over of the track nearest the retaining wall north of the College Avenue Bridge. Round-the-clock construction work is anticipated during this period. Construction activities will require the use of heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, back hoes, dump trucks, generators, air compressors, and construction lighting.

The GLX Team apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause, and has instructed work crews to minimize impacts to the community. If work progresses ahead of schedule, projected impacts may be lessened.

This work remains critical to support the next phases of work leading into construction in 2018.

Overnight and weekend work will continue as necessary and timely updates will be provided to affected neighborhoods. The GLX Project is progressing as scheduled and we thank you for your patience and support as we work to execute this signature project.

To Our Medford Neighbors
Nighttime Construction Advisory

Work continues along the railroad right-of-way in the vicinity of the Colby St and Burget Avenue neighborhoods in Medford.

On Friday, November 10th, work crews will enter the right-of-way adjacent to College Avenue and will continue working through the start of service Monday morning, November 13th. The purpose of this work is to complete the cut-over of Track #1 along the retaining wall north of the College Avenue Bridge. Construction activities will require the use of heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, back hoes, dump trucks, generators, air compressors, and construction lighting.

The GLX Team apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause, and has instructed work crews to minimize impacts to the community. Similar work hours and activities are anticipated for the weekend beginning Friday, November 17th through Monday morning November 20th.

This work remains critical to support the next phases of work leading into construction in 2018.

October 25, 2017
Nighttime Construction Advisory

Please be advised nighttime construction work is anticipated on the rail corridor west of the McGrath Highway Overpass on the FITCHBURG LINE in Somerville.

Work is scheduled to begin around midnight, Friday, 10/27/17 into Saturday morning, 10/28/17, and is expected to continue during daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday (10/28 and 10/29).

The purpose of this construction activity is to install a track switch and to perform track work during pre-planned, rail system outages. Construction activity will involve the use of front-end loaders, dump trucks, and backhoes utilizing audible back-up alarms.

Early Work Continues Along the Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line

Work continues along the railroad right-of-way in the vicinity of the Red Bridge Junction in Somerville and Cambridge seven days a week. This work remains critical to support the next phases of work leading into construction in 2018.

Each weekend, work crews access the right-of-way at the end of service Friday evening and continue work through start of service Monday morning. This weekend, Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17, as workers make progress with excavation, noise levels will vary. The GLX Team apologizes for the inconvenience this work may cause, and has instructed work crews to minimize impacts to the community.

Overnight weekend work will continue as necessary and timely updates will be provided to affected communities. The GLX Project is progressing smoothly and we thank you for your patience and support as we work to execute this signature project.
